Lūginė Chapel of Bl Jurgis Matulaitis

In 1991, a freestanding chapel dedicated to Blessed Jurgis Matulaitis was built in the village of Lūginė in the Šunskai district. It is the work of architect Zigmas Brazauskas. The chapel, which stands 4.8 kilometres from the Via Baltica highway, rises in the form of a tower over the plains of Sūduva to designate the place where the holy archbishop spent his childhood and youth. Particularly large crowds assemble here each July to commemorate the anniversary of Blessed Jurgis’s beatification, and on other days related to his life. Groups of young people traditionally come to Lūginė from Marijampolė for such occasions, sometimes by foot. Pilgrims are met by members of the Blessed Jurgis Matulaitis Society, who acquaint them with his life and teachings. The Eucharist is celebrated in an open area just opposite the chapel. The chapel in Lūginė is also the site of traditional celebrations for families.
